Networking Top Tips
27 July 2023

Have you ever walked into a networking event and just wanted to turn around and walk back out? We’ve all been there! Networking events can be intimidating but there are several strategies we use that can help you feel more confidence and make the most of the opportunity:

1. Prepare Ahead of Time: Before the event, research the attendees and the agenda to better understand the purpose and focus of the event. This will help you feel more confident and prepared to engage in conversations and ask questions.
2. Set Realistic Goals: Setting goals can help you feel more focused and motivated. Consider what you hope to accomplish at the event, such as meeting a specific person or learning about a particular topic.
3. Dress for Success: Dressing appropriately and professionally can help you feel more confident and make a good first impression.
4. Practice Your Introduction: Prepare a brief introduction that highlights your professional background and interests. Practice this introduction ahead of time so you can deliver it confidently.
5. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Asking open-ended questions can help you initiate and sustain conversations. This can also demonstrate your interest and engagement in the conversation.
6. Listen Carefully: Listening carefully can help you better understand the other person’s perspective and interests. It can also help you identify opportunities for follow-up conversations or connections.
7. Follow Up: After the event, follow up with individuals you met by sending a personalized message or connecting with them on social media. This can help establish a relationship and build your network.
8. Reflect and Learn: Take some time to reflect on the event and what you learned. Consider what went well and what could be improved for the next networking event.

But most importantly, be yourself!
